As a basic precaution you should always wear protective gear when inline skating. That means you will need some wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet. You can pick these up online or at your local skate shop. Once you are all set, it is time to head out and start skating. It can be pretty easy to lose control, and even experts sometimes take a spill when they are performing more difficult maneuvers. If it looks like you are going to fall, try to fall towards a less hazardous surface. If you are outside, there may be sand or grass nearby where you can wipe out. On a skate park, falling onto the softer part of a ramp rather than a sharp angle is helpful.
When you are falling, try to slide onto your kneepads and wrist guards. Inline skating is tough because you have to have good balance and control your weight distribution. Throwing your weight at the last second can help change the angle of your fall. Just make sure to be flexible and not stiff when you go down. Try not to slam down if you are falling. Go for a sliding motion instead. Always try to fall forward if you can. You have more protection that way. Falling backward exposes your back, your head, and your tailbone to serious injury. If falling backwards cannot be avoided, then try to land on your elbow pads and wrist guards as well as your buttocks. There is more cushioning there than there is on your hip or tailbone.
New skaters should sign up for some lessons if the want to learn the basics of inline skating. Start simple and advance slowly. You may want to perform some of the extreme moves that you see on television, but remember that those skaters have been performing for years. It is best to take it slow and learn at your own pace.
