When trying to ascertain why he hasnt been selected, Fletcher cited his experience with the draft as one of the possible reasons. Although he had a stellar college career at John Carroll, where he was the fourth all time tackler, Fletcher was not picked up during the draft. He instead signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent in 1998. Since that season, Fletcher has not missed a regular season game. He only started one game as a rookie, but by his second season he started every game. He had 90 tackles, two passes defended and three sacks in 1999, but Fletcher was just getting started. In 2000, he tallied 132 tackles, eight passes defended, five and a half sacks, one forced fumble and four interceptions. He finished out his time with the Rams in 2001 with 116 tackles, five passes defended, four and a half sacks, four forced fumbles and two interceptions.
Fletcher had an equally impressive career with the Buffalo Bills from 2002 2006. He started every regular season game while with the Bills, racking up the tackles, sacks, passes defended, forced fumbles and interceptions. His last year with the Buffalo Bills, Fletcher tallied his first defensive touchdown. He was signed by the Washington Redskins as a free agent before the 2007 season. That year, he had 128 tackles, 10 passes defended, three interceptions and his second defensive touchdown. He has started all 14 games so far this season with 118 tackles, five passes defended, half a sack and one forced fumble.
Fletcher clearly believes he has been snubbed from the highest honor this time around. Although the Redskins defense is ranked second in their conference and fifth in the NFL, no players from the Washington defense made it to the Pro Bowl. The Redskins who did get invites were running back Clinton Portis, fullback Mike Sellers, left tackle Chris Samuels and tight end Chris Cooley. With Fletcher being an 11 year pro, it is unclear whether he will be able to top some of his stats from his previous seasons, making a future Pro Bowl invite increasingly unlikely. Fletcher is to co captain of the Redskins defense. The Pro Bowl will take place on February 8, 2009 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
