Kevin Pietersen Under The Spotlight

Its going to be interesting to see how fast the British press turn on England captain, Kevin Pietersen, after his teams drubbing by India in the ODIs and the recent loss of the first test.

Early signs of discontent

There are already signs of deep discontent at Pietersens captaincy in both the media and by some of Englands former cricketing heroes, including Sir Ian Botham, who was particularly unimpressed by Englands slow batting leading up to the declaration.

Pietersens continued faith in Englands premier spin bowler, Monty Panesar, has also been questioned. The turning fifth day wicket at Chennai should have been perfect for Panesar to take control of the match, but instead he gave away 105 runs without taking a wicket. Panesars poor figures were certainly not what Pietersen and company were hoping for.

Some of the blame has to fall squarely on the shoulders of the captain, who should have been rather more proactive once the writing was on the wall for Panesar, but instead Pietersen stood idly by, watching, as 27 overs were bowled with no return.

A captain who is able to think on his feet is a priceless asset for any team but Pietersen appeared to stick to the game plan whether it was working or not not a very promising sign for the future of English cricket.

Inconsistent batting

It is not only Pietersens captaincy that has been under the spotlight but his batting too. One of the concerns of selecting Pietersen as captain was the possibility of it cramping his batting prowess and if one takes a quick glance at his batting record since he took over the captaincy from Michael Vaughan, it has been his inconsistency that is possibly the prime worry for the ECB.

Pietersen made the most of his initial stint at the helm of Englands talented eleven, winning the fourth and final test against his former country, South Africa. He was also totally in control of the ODI series against the South Africans, notching up a series whitewash but since then he has failed to record a win unless you take the 1 run victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the Stanford 20/20 Series as a genuine triumph.

There is little doubt Kevin Pietersen is one of the most talented cricketers the world has ever known but it is possible he is more valuable to England as a batsman than as the captain.
